HISTORY OF THE CHURCH

The Conaree Wesleyan Holiness Church (formerly known as the Conaree Pilgrim Holiness Church) began as a branch of the Basseterre Wesleyan Holiness Church.  The work began in 1959 by Brother Milton Williams, a member of the Basseterre Congregation.  Brother Williams went to Conaree one night and held an Open Air Service on the Conaree Hill.

The response from the community was very commendable.

This encouraged Brother Williams to return as often as possible.  The Open Air services continued and Brother Williams was later assisted by Brothers St. Clair Stapleton, Cedric Harper, Walter Skerritt, Ezekiel Ryan

and Sister Emiline Waldron.

As a result of these Open Air Services three persons were baptized –Mary Jones, Verna Isaac and Estelle Isaac and other services were introduced. Months of Open Air Services were held before a building was identified in which members could worship.  Finally Bro. Williams succeeded in renting a small house on the hill which was dedicated for Worship by the then District Superintendent the Rev. Harold Colon.  By this time the second set of persons were baptized – Emily Tudor and Joseph Delaney.

Bro. Williams then left the island for Bible School and Brothers Edward Cabey, St. Clair Stapleton and Sister Emiline Waldron continued to carry the load at Conaree. The Church continued to grow and new members were added from time to time.

Due to the continued growth a decision was made to move the Church from the hill down to a larger property in the village. This second place of

Worship was dedicated in 1965 by the then District Superintendent the Rev. Don Wachenswanz. It soon became necessary for the growing Church to have its own facilities.  Sister Waldron had the foresight to suggest the acquisition of some land and the erection of a Church building. Soon after the land was identified and purchased.

With consolidated determination, the construction of the building commenced in 1967.    Bro. James Carty who was the District Workman at that time designed and supervised the construction of the edifice.  The building was completed and dedicated in 1968.

The first Pastor who served at the newly constructed property which was known as the Conaree Pilgrim Holiness Church was the Rev. Hazel Harris. She initiated other services e.g. the midweek Bible Class and Youth Meetings. Other Pastors who served at the church were Rev. & Mrs. Charles Grant, Rev. and Mrs. Hugh Herbert, the Rev. Louisa Grant and the Rev. Ivy Singh.  The church is presently led by Pastor Loughlin Tatem.

The Church has grown and is properly established.  The Pilgrim Holiness Church was merged with the Wesleyan Church of the United States of America in 1968 hence the Church in the Caribbean is now known as the Wesleyan Holiness Church.
